Our Research

Palliative Nexus is a collaborative research group affiliated with the University of Melbourne, the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC), and St Vincent's Hospital and is focused on advancing palliative care through innovative research, education, and practice.

Recognizing the critical need for compassionate and comprehensive care for individuals facing serious illness, the Palliative Nexus brings together researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and community members to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Their work spans a broad spectrum of palliative care domains, from symptom management and psychosocial support to end-of-life care and bereavement.

Since its inception, the Palliative Nexus has achieved significant milestones in palliative care research. Their studies have contributed valuable insights into effective pain and symptom management strategies, improved communication and decision-making processes, and enhanced access to palliative care services for diverse populations.

Notable research achievements:

  • development and evaluation of novel interventions for managing complex symptoms

  • the exploration of innovative models of care delivery in various settings

  • investigation of the ethical and social dimensions of end-of-life care.

Palliative Nexus actively disseminates research findings through peer-reviewed publications, conferences, and community outreach initiatives, ensuring that evidence-based practices are translated into real-world improvements in patient care.

There has been substantial growth in our research portfolio and collaborative network. Starting with a core group of dedicated professionals, the Palliative Nexus has expanded to include a diverse range of researchers from various disciplines, including medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, and allied health professions. This interdisciplinary approach fosters cross-pollination of ideas and expertise, leading to more comprehensive and impactful research outcomes. We have established strong partnerships with healthcare institutions, community organizations, and government agencies, facilitating the translation of research into policy and practice.

Current research initiatives include advanced care planning, palliative care integration in primary care, quality of life assessment, caregiver support, and the use of technology in palliative care delivery.

Palliative Nexus is helping to shape the future of palliative care and making a tangible difference in the lives of those facing serious illness.
